Training & Resources

Build a department-specific training plan that helps student employees understand their work, practice essential tasks, and develop confidence over time.

Build Your Office Training Plan

  1. Identify what students need to know. Include the office mission, responsibilities, schedule, communication, confidentiality, conduct, technology, equipment, and safety procedures.
  2. Break training into stages. Separate what must be covered before the first shift, during the first shift, in the first week, and during the first month.
  3. Use multiple learning methods. Demonstrate tasks, provide written instructions, allow guided practice, and assign an experienced contact when appropriate.
  4. Check for understanding. Ask the student to explain or demonstrate the task and correct misunderstandings before independent work begins.
  5. Continue training. Add responsibilities gradually, revisit expectations, and provide coaching as the student develops.
